What does the Trolling Motor Control Foil do?

The Newport Trolling Motor Control Foil reduces oversteering and drift, providing enhanced maneuverability and straighter tracking in wind, current, or chop. It delivers smoother and more responsive control in all conditions.

Will it fit my trolling motor?

Yes. Although this product is optimized for Newport, it’s universally compatible with a wide range of trolling motor shaft diameters, from 1.14" - 1.38".

How hard is it to install?

Installation takes under 5 minutes. Using only a screwdriver and the included self-tapping screws, a strong clamping force is achieved. For additional security, you may choose to install the included friction tape as outlined in the manual.

Is it compatible with both saltwater and freshwater?

Yes. It’s built from a reinforced composite material that resists corrosion, UV, and wear—perfect for both salt and fresh water. Stainless steel hardware is provided with your kit.

How does it compare to other rudder-style fins on the market?

Compared to other clamp-on rudders, the Newport Trolling Motor Control Foil features a larger effective surface area, a more universal fit and better hydrodynamics - streamlining water flow and providing enhanced steering authority. The 8-screw mounting method provides greater rigidity and higher clamping force. Our Control Foil is easily adjustable with a single screwdriver, making on-the-water adjustments easy.

Can I use it with GPS or spot-lock motors?

Absolutely. It works great alongside more advanced systems by reducing steering correction, especially in wind and current.

Will it work on kayaks and small boats?

Yes. It’s ideal for optimized control on kayaks, jon boats, inflatables, and skiffs.

How do I know it’s installed correctly?

If the foil is centered and snug against the shaft, you’re good to go. We always recommend manually testing the rotational resistance before you hit the water. If you can’t turn it by hand, it will withstand hard use on the water.

Will this fit my NK180PRO or NK300?

The NK300 already has a foil installed. This Control Foil doesn’t apply to the NK300. The NK180PRO has a shaft diameter of 1.15”, which is outside the fitment range.
