Quick Start Guide: Installing the Newport Trolling Motor Control Foil

Quick Start Guide: Installing the Newport Trolling Motor Control Foil

Written by: Howie Strech, Newport

If you’re looking to unlock more responsive steering, cleaner water flow, and more precise control over your boat, the  Newport Trolling Motor Control Foil is your next must-have upgrade.

This low-profile, hydrodynamic foil is designed to enhance performance and stability in all conditions—from calm mornings to heavy current. Best of all, installation takes just a few minutes with a single tool.

Why Add a Control Foil?

The Newport Trolling Motor Control Foil increases steering authority by improving the flow of water around your motor shaft and propeller. Installed correctly, the foil eliminates ventilation, improves tracking, and gives you better control in wind, current, or even when gliding to a stop as you approach a fishing area.

With 1–2 inches of the foil exposed above the waterline, you’ll achieve the cleanest water flow possible—resulting in smoother operation and a more responsive boat control.

What’s in the Box

Each kit includes everything you need for a quick, secure installation:

  • Instruction manual

  • Trailing edge & leading edge foil pieces

  • 3M friction tape

  • Stainless steel hardware (eight self-tapping screws)

🛠️ Tools Required

  • Phillips head screwdriver*

*Optional: Alcohol wipe to prep the motor shaft for best adhesion of friction tape.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Position the Foil

Identify your boat’s waterline and determine where the foil will sit on the motor shaft. For most transom-mounted jon boats, the foil installs flush against the motor pylon.

2. Apply the Friction Tape

Clean and prep the shaft, then apply the included 3M friction tape along the leading or trailing edge of the motor shaft. This helps hold the trailing edge of the foil in place as you fasten it down.

3. Align the Foil

Line up the foil so that the apex of the trailing edge sits in line with the prop nut. Proper alignment ensures smooth water flow and optimal performance.

4. Secure the Foil

Using the eight stainless steel screws, loosely install each one, then gradually tighten them in sequence. Apply even pressure and stop when resistance increases. Give each screw a final half turn for a snug fit.

Universal Fit, Durable Design

The Newport Trolling Motor Control Foil features a universal fit for shafts between 1.14" and 1.38" in diameter, making it compatible with nearly any trolling motor—including bow-mount and spot-lock models.

Its composite construction is rugged enough for both fresh and saltwater environments, and all included hardware is stainless steel for corrosion resistance.

On-Water Performance

Once installed, the foil enhances water flow over the prop, providing:

  • Cleaner and more efficient propulsion

  • Improved tracking and responsiveness

  • Greater control in wind, current, and drift

  • More consistent speed and handling

The result? A smoother, more responsive and predictable experience every time you hit the water.

The Way Forward Is Electric

Installing your Newport Trolling Motor Control Foil is one of the easiest ways to fine-tune your setup for peak performance and control. Whether you’re navigating strong current or sneaking into shallow flats on a tide change, this simple upgrade makes a big difference in boat handling.

Cleaner flow. Better control. More efficiency on the water.
