Electric Outboard Motors for Jon Boats, Skiffs & Inflatables

An electric outboard motor is a primary propulsion system — the same role a gas outboard plays, but powered entirely by a lithium battery instead of fuel. Unlike trolling motors, which are designed for slow-speed boat positioning, electric outboards are engineered to move vessels at cruising speed across open water with no emissions, no fuel costs, and no engine maintenance. Newport's NT Series Electric Outboards are purpose-built for small boats up to 16 feet, including jon boats, inflatable skiffs, dinghies, and tenders. They mount to standard transom brackets, operate from an external battery, and use brushless direct-drive motors that require no oil changes, no spark plugs, and hassle-free maintenance.

Newport offers two electric outboard models in the NT Series. The NT600 delivers 6 horsepower equivalent (3,000W) on a 48V system, produces 160 pounds of thrust, weighs 52 pounds, and is rated for boats up to 16 feet — making it the most powerful motor in Newport's lineup and one of the most capable electric outboards available for small vessels. It features a full digital LCD display that shows speed, battery percentage, and voltage in real time, includes Bluetooth connectivity and GPS-capable readouts, and is IP67 waterproof rated. The NT300 delivers 3 horsepower equivalent (1,300W) on a 36V system, produces 110 pounds of thrust, and weighs just 23.8 pounds — making it one of the most portable true outboard motors on the market. Both motors use field-oriented control (FOC) technology for smooth throttle response, operate at approximately 40 decibels, and require hassle-free maintenance beyond rinsing after saltwater use.

Choosing between the NT600 and NT300 comes down to boat size, battery voltage, and how much power you need on the water. The NT300 runs on a 36V system, draws 37 amps at peak, tops out at 6.5 mph, and achieves a maximum range of 66 miles and up to 30 hours of runtime on a compatible battery — making it the right choice for anglers on smaller inflatables, tenders, and jon boats under 14 feet who prioritize portability and efficiency. Its shaft is available in two lengths, 24.6 inches standard or 29 inches long, accommodating most small-boat transom heights. The NT600 runs on a 48V system, draws 62.5 amps at peak, and is paired with Newport's 48V 70Ah LoPRO Lithium Battery — expect roughly 1 hour of runtime at full throttle or significantly longer at cruising speeds. The NT600's adjustable power mode allows the output to be reduced to as low as 2,000W for extended range or for lighter-hull applications like inflatable skiffs. A minimum 30Ah battery is required for the NT300 and a 70Ah minimum is recommended for the NT600.

Electric outboard motors are increasingly common among bass anglers, duck hunters, freshwater fishermen on no-wake and electric-only lakes, kayak anglers upgrading to small skiffs, and eco-conscious boaters in protected or noise-restricted waterways. NT Series motors are approved for use in many electric-only bodies of water where gas outboards are prohibited. The NT300's lightweight 23.8-pound build makes it practical for car-top boaters and solo anglers launching from unimproved ramps. The NT600, at 52 pounds with a 26.8-inch shaft and four-position trim adjustment, is the better choice for boaters running the Newport NS130 inflatable skiff or similar 13–16 foot vessels at sustained speed.
