Speed switch is junk

Never had to replace a speed switch in many years of running a Minnkota trolling motor. I bought a Newport Vessels 55lb thrust trolling motor about 3.5 years ago and I have to replace the speed switch 3 times. To make matters worse, three of the wires are attached to the terminals of the switch using some of the smallest screws, nuts, and washers you can imagine, making this replacement job a huge pain.

Every interaction with Newport was easy and professional. Parts Support was actually a pleasant and informative experience. None of the noise from a call center and I never had to ask if they would repeat what they said. I was aware of my uninformed questions however they treated me as if I was trying to buy the company instead of the $22 part I needed. Steven was a champ and pro. ( I m not getting paid to say this ,but its rare to experience customer service as good as what they provide)

If there were negative stars I would opt for that. At the “advice” of customer/warranty service I ordered this to fix a trolling motor only functioning in full reverse and full forward. Replaced it and the motor is still a piece of garbage. Pulled the prop and the entire coil is rusted out. Would not buy another Newport motor again.

Easy repair

I have been usimg the L series trolling motor on my sailboat for years. The speed switch had to be replaced, and it was a very manageable task. In about an hour I disassembled the housing, replaced the switch and put everything back together. The next day I was back out on the water. The actual wiring is super easy: 5 color coded wires; 2 clip ons and 3 screw & bolt. They are tiny, so a small screw driver and a pair of pliers is handy. I suggest taking a photo if the original set up to keep colors in the right order.

Haven't installed the speed switch quite yet, but the service over the phone was pretty good.

Speedy delivery

My old Newport stopped pushing and a new speed switch was required . Ordered it on line on a Friday afternoon, 5 days later , all the way across the country, across a border, into the badlands of Muskoka a package was dropped at my door . Cost a lot but it got the job done .

Replaced speed control

Fairly straightforward. Resolved the issue of 4th and 5th speed being the same.

My experience with customer service was great. But the part they sent me did not resolve my trolling motor speed issue.

Speed switch replacement

Old speed control switch burned out (due to my own fault for not getting a circuit breaker). The replacement was a fairly inexpensive and easy fix, and the shipping timely and reasonable.
