NT600 Quick Start Guide
The Official Setup Guide for Newport’s 6HP/3,000W Electric Outboard
Welcome to the NT600 Quick Start blog! Whether it’s your first time using a Newport motor or you’re upgrading to our most powerful electric outboard yet, this step-by-step guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get set up and ready for the water.
Mount the Tiller Handle
To begin, install the tiller handle on the motor head:
-
Insert the nylon bushing over the bolt hole in the motor head.
-
Place the locking nut in the nut recess on the bottom of the motor head.
-
Insert the bolt through the top and hand-tighten with a 5mm Allen Key.
-
Shift the tiller into the left-handed steering position and use a 5mm Allen key to seat the bolt fully.
Connect the Communication Cable
-
Align the notch on the communication cable plug and motor communication port, underneath the motor head.
-
Tighten the stainless steel collar until snug.
Install the Cavitation Plate
This step is key to optimal water flow over the prop:
-
Position the cavitation plate 1–2 inches below the bottom of the hull line.
-
Trim the motor upward for an easier installation.
-
Use a 5mm Allen key to attach the cavitation plate to the motor shaft, at the appropriate running depth.
-
Tighten evenly by alternating sides while finally ensuring prop clearance.
Optional – Remove the Carry Handle
The NT600 includes a center-balanced carry handle for portability. If your motor is permanently mounted, you can remove it with a 6mm Allen key.
Set the Trim Pin
Before your first outing:
-
Set the trim pin to the second hole up from the bottom, as a good starting point.
-
This setting provides the best all-around performance for most boats.
Adjust the Tiller Handle Position
For easy transport and operation:
-
Pull the green knob at the side of the tiller handle to rotate the handle up and down. Rotate the locking knob a quarter tun to lock the tiller handle into position, or keep the tiller handle free-swinging.
-
Pull the knob at the top of the tiller handle to adjust to left/right-hand steering preference. Release to allow the spring-loaded action to lock the handle into the desired setting.
Connect to Power
The NT600 supports 48V deep cycle or lithium batteries:
-
Use the included ring terminal w/ SB120 plug to connect to a battery terminals (note: larger than NK/NT300 connectors). If you're using the 48V LoPRO battery, use the LoPRO power cable harness to connect your motor to power.
-
If using a 48V LoPRO Battery, Connect the communication cable between the motor and the battery.
-
Plug in the SB120 connector to power the system.
Insert the Magnetic Kill Switch
When powered on without the emergency key, you’ll hear a beeping sound.
-
Place the magnetic kill switch on its rest to enable the motor, and power up the screen by pushing the power button.
Navigate the On-Screen Menu
Double-tap the Menu button on top of the tiller to enter customizable settings.

Throttle Calibration (Optional)
If needed, calibrate throttle via the menu:
