Trolling Motors

A trolling motor is an electric secondary propulsion motor used to move a boat quietly and precisely at low speeds — for holding position, working a shoreline, or navigating areas where a gas engine would disturb fish or violate noise restrictions. Unlike primary outboard motors, trolling motors mount to the boat's transom using a clamp-style bracket, draw power from a 12V or 24V deep cycle battery, and are controlled via a tiller handle at the motor head. Newport's trolling motor lineup covers four distinct applications: the NV Series for saltwater and freshwater fishing boats, the Kayak Series for kayak anglers who need a shorter shaft, the X Series for anglers who need maximum handle adjustability, and the L Series for larger boats and sailboats that require a 40-inch shaft to reach the water.

The NV Series is Newport's best-selling trolling motor and the most versatile in the lineup, available in five thrust options — 36lb, 46lb, 55lb, and 62lb on 12V, and 86lb on 24V — with a telescoping handle, a 5-point LED battery meter, and shaft lengths of 30 inches (36–55lb models) or 36 inches (62lb model). The Kayak Series uses the same control upgrades as the NV Series but with a 24-inch adjustable shaft designed for the low-profile gunwales of sit-on-top and sit-inside kayaks, available in 36lb and 55lb thrust, and weighing between 18 and 23 pounds. The X Series offers 55lb of thrust on a 36-inch shaft with a handle that telescopes and tilts up to 30 degrees in either direction — making it the most adjustable tiller handle in the lineup and a strong fit for anglers fishing from unusual positions or non-standard mount locations. The L Series is Newport's original design, built for medium-to-large boats and sailboats with a 40-inch fiberglass composite shaft, available in 62lb (12V) and 86lb (24V) thrust, with an 8-speed configuration and a 10-inch three-blade propeller.

Choosing the right Newport trolling motor comes down to three factors: shaft length, thrust rating, and boat size. Shaft length should be matched to the height of your transom — the propeller needs to run approximately 12 inches below the water's surface for clean thrust without cavitation. Newport's 24-inch Kayak Series shaft is built for low-sided kayaks and canoes; the 30- and 36-inch NV Series and X Series shafts cover most fishing boats, jon boats, and inflatables; and the 40-inch L Series shaft is designed for deeper transoms found on larger vessels and sailboats. For thrust, a general rule is that boats up to 12 feet work well with 36–46lb motors, 12- to 16-foot boats are well-served by 55lb motors, and boats 16 feet and larger typically need 62lb or 86lb thrust. The 86lb NV Series and 86lb L Series motors both run on 24V, requiring two 12V batteries wired in series. Trolling motors are standard equipment for bass anglers who need silent, hands-free boat control while casting, walleye and crappie fishermen working structure at slow drifting speeds, kayak anglers who use a trolling motor as supplemental propulsion alongside paddling, and saltwater inshore anglers fishing flats or estuaries where engine noise spooks fish. Because all Newport trolling motors use stainless and zinc hardware throughout, they are built to withstand repeated saltwater exposure — though rinsing with fresh water after each saltwater outing is recommended to prevent long-term corrosion.
